Stila In the Know: Review & Look

This one’s an oldie but a goodie. I’m talking about Stila’s In The Know palette.

Launched as part of the Fall 2012 collection, Stila’s In The Know palette features 10 matte eyeshadow shades ranging from cool to warm tones that flatter every skin tone and can be worn wet or dry. The palette also includes an exclusive Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in Halfmoon, a matte charcoal grey shade, plus an eight-page look book with detailed application tips.

The packaging is kept simple, minimalistic and lightweight with its hard cardboard case featuring a large mirror and the 10 eyeshadow pans with a magnetic closure. This palette would definitely be great for travel given how portable it is but I can’t guarantee the packaging will survive a check-in at the airport.

Given that matte eyeshadows are usually harder to produce well, each shade in this palette whilst not particularly spectacular, has very decent pigmentation and isn’t chalky. When swatched from the pan, some of the shades may seem somewhat powdery, kicking up a fair amount of product if you are not careful. Still, the eyeshadows here aren’t dry or patchy; some shades are relatively creamy, in fact. It is also worthy to note that these shadows are produced free of parabens, sulfates, synthetic dyes, petrochemicals, phthalates and triclosan.

Halfmoon, the Stila Smudge Stick that is included with this palette, is a gorgeous deep grey that comes off rather warm toned.

Whether it is to create a daytime or night-time look, this palette has shades that are elegant enough to give that polished look without trying too hard. Like I said, I have learnt to appreciate matte eyeshadows more as I grow older and an eyeshadow palette that features ALL matte shades is definitely hard to come by. Shades featured in the collection include:

  • air – matte beige
  • driftwood – mid tone brown
  • wind – soft matte peach
  • fire – matte brick
  • desert – soft matte tan w/warm undertones
  • rain -matte brown
  • clay – matte warm light brown
  • smoke – matte charcoal grey
  • earth – deep matte chocolate brown
  • ebony – matte black

The look booklet included with the palette showcases a look called Desert Beauty, utilising the matte brick shade named fire to create an easily blended eyeshadow look that is both ethereal and dramatic which I was more than determined to adapt into a daytime, office-appropriate makeup look. So here it is…
